If you're traveling for tourism, visiting loved ones, or just transiting through the UK, you'll need to secure an eTA before your journey begins.
  • This streamlined system is part of the UK government’s initiative to modernize border controls by 2025, aiming to make entry more efficient and straightforward. From exploring the rich history of London to venturing through the scenic Scottish Highlands, the UK eTA allows you to obtain travel authorization without the need for a traditional visa.

Do You Need a UK eTA? Check Before You Travel

The United Kingdom is gradually introducing its new Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system, starting with certain countries and expanding in stages. If you're a citizen of an eligible country, you'll need to secure an eTA before entering the UK—even if you previously didn't require a visa.

The rollout began on November 15, 2023, with travelers from Qatar. It later extended to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, and Jordan, with applications available from February 1, 2024, for entry starting February 22, 2024.

A major update occurred on March 5, 2025, when 34 additional European countries—including EU member states—were added to the program. As of April 2, 2025, citizens of these countries are now required to have an approved eTA before traveling to the UK.

Features
Standard Normal Processing

Most applicants can expect to receive a decision on their UK eTA within 3 working days after submitting their application. Sometimes, approvals come even faster depending on your individual circumstances.

Possible Delays

In some cases, processing may take longer due to:

  • Additional Security Checks If extra background checks or verifications are required, your application might need more time for review.
  • High Application Volume During busy travel seasons or due to operational factors, the influx of applications can slow down processing times.
  • Incomplete or Incorrect Applications If your application has errors or missing information, it could delay the approval process while the issues are resolved.

UK eTA Decision

After the application is processed, the applicant will receive a decision on their eTA application by email.

Approval

Once approved, the eTA is automatically connected to the traveler’s passport and a confirmation is sent via email. There’s no need to present a separate document upon arrival — border agents can verify the eTA electronically. The authorization stays valid for two years, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first — and allows for multiple visits to the UK, with each stay lasting up to six months.

Rejection

If your eTA application is declined, you’ll be notified of the outcome by email. Common reasons for refusal include ineligibility, errors in your application, or security-related issues. In such cases, you may still be able to enter the UK by applying for a standard visa, depending on the purpose and length of your intended stay.
